Emerson (PA) Labrador Retriever Adult Male in Knoxville, Pennsylvania

My story
Emerson is being fostered in PA.

Emerson is proving to be a perfect medium-sized boy. His preference is right beside his foster mom on the recliner but if that spot is not available, he will gladly sleep on the love seat or a bed on the floor. He will come over to the chair occasionally to get a pet, will get a drink and will go back to his nap.

Emerson is house trained and used to stay in a large, oversized crate although he was not happy with that so he now has free run of the downstairs and has perfect house manners to do just that. He also walks very well on a leash. He would love to sleep in bed with his foster mom but he is not allowed upstairs because he is too curious about the 2 cats.

Emerson needs to gain about 5 pounds to be at a good weight for his frame.

He is gentle and tolerant with adults and other dogs. He has not yet been around children but it is anticipated that he will be fine with respectful children who are gentle and calm around him. He respects other dogs and will even shy away from dogs who are a bit too much in his face. Many times he will not even stop to sniff a new dog. He lives with cats and is very curious, in a manner that makes his foster mom believe he may not have had much exposure to them in his life. He attempted to grab an office cat when he was at the vet’s office. It would be best if he’s in a home without cats.

He has no vision in his right eye and some pretty good, but not perfect, vision in his left. He will see an ophthalmologist on February 1st and an update will be given following that visit.

He had his first visit with the regular vet on January 6th and his bloodwork was good and he appears to be a healthy boy. He will need a dental at the end of January to address some tartar build up but, overall, his teeth look very good. He was treated for double ear infections right before coming to his foster home. His ears are a bit thick from scar tissue from chronic infections in his past so we are trying some foods with fewer known allergens to see if this helps. His hearing is affected somewhat from these infections. He can hear but seems to have a hard time discerning where the sound is coming from.

Emerson’s face is a bit asymmetrical and our rescue was told that his vision was fine until right after his neuter surgery in October. Following the surgery, his right eye became cloudy and we are not sure if this is when his face became a bit droopy on the one side. One vet has mentioned the possibility of a stroke but we should know more after his ophthalmology visit on February 1st.

Emerson will be a sweet companion for a family who enjoys a 35-40 pound lap dog and a constant companion.

BDRA has voted against the use of electrical fencing effective immediately.
